The Pakistani Pharmaceutical Regulatory Authority (PRA) on Monday said it has banned a drug used for treating heartburn in a Pakistani patient. The drug, Prilosec (omeprazole) - a brand-name drug that is manufactured by AstraZeneca, was found to be associated with an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. PPRA also said it has seized a large amount of counterfeit Prilosec samples in the process.
The PRA had said it had detected a small amount of the medicine in the lab and that the drug was only intended to treat heartburn. The medicine is available over the counter and is known to cause stomach pain.
PPRA said it has also seized other counterfeit medicines, including Nexium, which it says was linked to an increased risk of heart attacks. The PRA said it was investigating further.
