A new study from New York University suggests that people who use the prescription painkiller Nexium may be more likely to be prescribed more than they should. They were given a drug called esomeprazole to reduce heartburn and acid reflux in a study of 24 men. The New York University study was published in the January issue ofJournal of the American Medical Associationby Dr. Daniel Z. Rosenblum, M. D., a gastroenterologist with the New York University College of Medicine. He is the chief of infectious diseases at the University of Rochester and is a professor of medicine at the New York University School of Medicine.

One group took a drug called esomeprazole, the other a PPI called Nexium. The men taking Nexium were given the drug for 14 days. Each group was given a placebo for 14 days.

The study, which was published online June 15 in theNew England Journal of Medicine, was a “prevention-and-treatment” study of participants who were prescribed a drug known as Nexium. The researchers looked at the risk of heartburn, acid reflux and acid-related symptoms in the study. They looked at all of the participants.
